What is Aerobic Activity

Aerobic activity is the body using oxygen to perform an activity that is long in duration but usually lower in intensity. It increases your breathing and forces your heart to pump blood to your body at a faster rate than normal.

This increases your fitness level and also improves your circulatory and cardiovascular system. Aerobic activity is the quickest way to improve your overall fitness level which will help control your weight and blood sugar levels.

Some major benefits to consistent aerobic workouts include but aren’t limited to:

  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Stamina and endurance increase
  • More energy for regular daily activities
  • Less tension and stress
  • Reduce anxiety and sleep better
  • Metabolize and burn fat more efficiently
  • Better all around muscle tone and increase in muscle mass

If your beginning a aerobic program it’s good to check with your doctor first. After you are cleared to exercise I would suggest starting out walking and don’t worry about speed or mileage. Pay more attention to how long your exercise session lasts.

Start out slow and try to build up to 15-20 minutes of continuous activity 3-4 times a week. If you are walking you can probably walk everyday without any ill effects. Choose a pace that gets you breathing faster but not so fast that you can’t say 2-4 words in a row. If you are able to carry on a conversation you are probably walking to slow for optimum aerobic benefit.

Here we will define aerobic capacity.
