Schwinn ellipticals are manufactured by the Nautilus Health and Fitness Group, best known for their “Bowflex” products. As one of the largest manufacturers of fitness equipment in the world, Nautilus has a solid reputation for producing reliable, quality fitness equipment.

The Schwinn elliptical line includes three models, the 418, 428 and the 438, all designed and priced for home use. All three models retail for under $1500 and are good values for the money. Nautilus manufactures its products with good quality components, and the Schwinn ellipticals are no exception. The units use the Eddy Current Brake resistance system, the accepted industry standard, and the larger than average front flywheel provides smooth, relatively quiet operation.

All of the Schwinn models are front drive designs. Most of the elliptical machines in health clubs are rear drive, a configuration considered to be somewhat more durable and maintenance free. Other front drive models often seem uncomfortable and awkward, but Schwinn has solved this problem nicely with articulated pedals, eliminating the awkardness of the front drive system. Although not rated for the most strenuous of workouts, the Schwinn’s front drive design will hold up for average to heavy home use.
