The Benefits of Walking on a TreadmillWalking on a treadmill is one of the best ways to get in shape, whether you have weight problems or simply want to keep your body and mind healthy. This simple aerobic workout is an effective way to stimulate fat burning in the comfortable conditions of your home and keep your muscles healthy and fit. Walking on a treadmill regularly, three to four times a week can improve your conditioning, lose weight, and also give you more energy. If you are not very physically adept and jogging seems to hard or time-consuming, walking on a treadmill could provide a good start to shaping your body to the way you always wanted it to look like. Treadmills are designed to provide a comfortable way for you to achieve that, while also monitoring your heart rate activity in case you have problems with your cardio system. There are a number of treadmill walking workouts you can do, you can even use power walking techniques on a treadmill. In case you don't get too much movement and sport in your life, you will probably have a hard time adjusting to the rhythm jogging and running will set. Don't worry though, as your walking ability will most likely be in good shape. A recent study has shown that a human being's walking ability constantly increases from ages 20 (when the human body is considered to stop growing) to 40 (when your walking ability will stagnate). At the peak of this boost in your walk ability, it will already have been increased by 1.5, or even 2 times. This of course may vary from person to person, but this is the general rule. By example, if you have children it’s easy to get kids to start walking on a treadmill. Obesity is now considered the number one health concern in the U.S. and the effect it has on the comfort of people’s lives is enormous. First thing you need to do if you want to start a health program based on walking on a treadmill, is to make sure that all internal and external conditions favor this. Internal conditions include health problems, cardiovascular problems, respiratory system problems or other situations where your body could have direct problems if you make to much effort. External conditions include a quiet, calm and relaxing workout environment and treadmill quality (make sure the poor quality of the treadmill won't affect your health, causing ankle problems or feet pain). The best option is to always start off slow, you will likely avoid injury and enjoy your exercise program more. While executing the walking program, make sure you are not too tired and you have a bottle of water near you, so you can drink in case you get thirsty without having to interrupt the program. Walking on a treadmill for a longer period is quite energy draining even for the physically adept people out there, so you will need to replenish your energy by drinking liquids (water preferably). Executing the program on a daily basis or at least 3-4 times each week, you will soon notice a solid improvement in the strength and endurance of your legs, your respiratory system, fat burning and overall physical condition. Walking is a perfect way to get in shape and is one of the most popular work-out methods, mainly because it's effective and it can be practiced by almost anyone, regardless of age, physical condition, time, or laziness factor (yes, this is a major advantage of working out on treadmills - it gives even the laziest people out there an alternative to that long, boring, time-consuming and expensive gym work-out). After you feel you've gained enough strength and physical power, you can move up a step, to jogging. One major question people have is how fast do you need to walk on a treadmill to get an aerobic workout. Most experts agree 65-85 percent of your total heart rate minus your age. 220 – your age = total x 65% gives you the effective range for basic aerobic fitness. Another simple method is to walk at a pace that you can say 4-5 words without having to gasp for air, but not have the air capacity to carry on a casual conversation. Walk brisk enough for this method and you can be assured that your aerobic system is getting a sufficient workout. You will see an increase in your fitness level, energy level, and weight loss, walking on a Treadmill and have and unlikely chance of suffering over use and training injuries.
